Nicholas Blase has begun his retirement today. The 80-year-old former Niles mayor chose to retire from the post he has held since 1961, and spending more than half of his life working in the village.
The retirement before his term ended on April, 2009 was probably expedited by his trial on federal charges of a long-term bribe scheme, through which he was able to take $420,000.
Blase, whose trial will begin in September, added that does not plan to hold another public office in the future.
Niles officials will meet tomorrow to decide who will replace Blase until the term is over next year.
