Illinois test results show that about one-third of all of the state public schools did not meet No Child Left Behind standards. Out of the state’s 3,803 schools, 1,196 or 31% did not meet the federal standards.
This makes it the second time since the plan was implemented that the number of schools that did not meet standards has increased. Last year, the number was 24%. Some of the reasons why the state’s schools may have had this setback is that this year, the percentage of students that had to perform at grade level in Reading and Math is 62.5, while last year, it was 55%.
Another obstacle that the schools faced when trying to meet the performance requirements is that this year, students whose first language is not English had to take the same test as the rest of the students.
The results this year are concerning education officials because next year, the percentage to be met is 70%.
